After winning the HHASA Division 1 state title this year, Waiakea received top honors in BIIF baseball.
Dylan Honda, a pitcher from Waiakea, won the Player of the Year in All-BIIF D-1 baseball.
“This was so special since it was my senior year and we lost two years of baseball to COVID,” Honda said. “It was such a good feeling that the hard work has paid off after so many years.”
Honda has played baseball since he was three years old and will be attending Hawaii Pacific University this year on a baseball scholarship.
“I’m super excited, because all the work in the high school seasons paid off when we won state,” Honda said. “Now it’s all focused on college and I’m excited to see what is to come.”
Winning Coach of the Year was none other than Honda’s father, Chris Honda, from Waiakea.
“As a coach, I was honored to be part of this whole experience. The boys played well all year and I’m very proud of them,” said Chris Honda. “We played against great teams and came from behind in our last three games.
They played as a team and I was grateful to be part of that,” Honda continued.
Waiakea finished last season 11-0. Chris Honda will continue to coach as his son moves on to college baseball.
“I am so honored to be their coach and so proud that they could bring the Division 1 state title to the Big Island and to Waiakea,” Chris Honda said.
